Company Overview:

Function was founded with a singular focus: empower you to live 100 healthy years. We’re doing that by using the best available technology to make sure people don't suffer or die a preventable death. Function has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024, and is venture-backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
Hundreds of thousands of members have joined Function to take control of their health. We are growing our team and seeking out world-class talent that deeply believes in our mission to positively impact global health, has a relentless bias toward action and a growth mindset. Function fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment, where every day we are building the future.

Role:

The Senior Director of Revenue Accounting and Operations will be responsible for all accounting and operations related to the revenue cycle, including the implementation of systems, processes, and workflows to handle high-volume transactions, revenue recognition, billing, and compliance across international markets. This individual will oversee revenue recognition under ASC 606, manage our integration with Stripe, leveraging the data warehouse, and ensure accurate recording of revenue across all markets. Your expertise in handling complex revenue operations and high transaction volumes will be critical as we continue to scale.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Revenue Accounting Leadership: Oversee all accounting functions related to the revenue cycle, ensuring accurate and timely revenue recognition in compliance with ASC 606 and other applicable accounting standards. Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring that revenue is recognized properly across all international markets. Collaborate with the finance team to align revenue accounting practices with overall financial strategies and goals. Ensure that all revenue accounting policies, including those related to the recognition of performance obligations, variable consideration, and multi-element arrangements, are properly defined and adhered to, as applicable.
  • System Implementation & Optimization: Lead the implementation and optimization of revenue-related systems to support global operations and high-volume transactions, with a focus on scalability and efficiency. Oversee the integration of Stripe as our billing platform, the data warehouse accumulating all the relevant transactional details, ensuring smooth revenue cycle management, from invoicing/credit card payment through to revenue recognition. Collaborate with IT and other cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of Stripe and other financial systems with the broader enterprise architecture. Design systems that can support the complexities of managing international revenue, tax compliance, and multi-currency transactions.
  • Operational Excellence and Scalability: Develop and implement efficient and scalable processes to manage the end-to-end revenue cycle, ensuring all steps—billing, revenue recognition, and reporting—are handled effectively and with a high degree of accuracy. Lead efforts to automate and streamline manual processes, reducing inefficiencies and ensuring that high transaction volumes are processed accurately and on time. Ensure that the revenue cycle processes can scale as the business grows into new international markets, managing varying tax regulations, currency conversion, and local market-specific compliance needs.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Marketing, Operations, and Data teams to ensure accurate tracking of customer data, usage metrics, and marketing promotions, including ensuring these are reflected in revenue systems. Partner with Marketing to ensure that discounts, promotions, and revenue-sharing arrangements are captured correctly within the revenue recognition process. Collaborate with the Operations team to ensure operational workflows align with financial systems, particularly around refunds, revenue sharing, and cost allocations related to revenue. Work with the Data team to ensure the proper handling of data, ensuring accuracy in revenue calculations and reporting across all business models and international markets.
  • Revenue Reporting and Analysis: Develop and manage reporting processes that provide actionable insights into the company’s revenue performance, including regular forecasts and variance analysis. Prepare global revenue reports that capture performance across all regions and business segments. Lead the development of automated reporting tools that provide real-time insights into the company’s financial performance, enabling data-driven decision-making. Discounts, Promotions, and Refunds Management: Oversee the accounting and impact of various discounts, promotions, and revenue-sharing arrangements. Ensure that promotional revenue is recognized in accordance with ASC 606, including the appropriate timing and allocation of discounts and other variable considerations. Manage refund processes, ensuring that refunds and returns are accurately reflected in financial systems and do not distort revenue figures.
  • Audit and Compliance: Ensure compliance with ASC 606, (potentially IFRS and other applicable accounting standards), particularly as they relate to complex, multi-market revenue operations. Support external audits and work closely with auditors to ensure all revenue accounting processes and systems are properly documented and compliant. Review and update revenue recognition policies and procedures regularly to stay aligned with evolving regulatory and business requirements.
  • Team Leadership: Build, lead, and develop a high-performing revenue accounting team, ensuring they have the necessary skills and training to manage the increasing complexity of the revenue cycle. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence, helping the team navigate the growing challenges of scaling revenue operations globally. Establish clear objectives for the team and provide mentorship to support their professional development.
Qualifications/Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or equivalent certification required).
  • At least 10 years of experience in revenue accounting, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position.
  • Expertise in ASC 606, with a deep understanding of its application to DTC and B2B2C models.
  • Proven experience managing high-volume transactions and handling revenue recognition in international markets.
  • Strong experience with Stripe or similar billing platforms, and the ability to integrate these systems effectively into a broader accounting function.
  • Strong experience with multi-entity and multi-currency revenue accounting, as well as managing international taxes and regulations.
  • Excellent knowledge of ERP systems, financial reporting tools, and revenue recognition software.
  • Proven leadership and project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and implement systems that support scalable growth.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with SaaS, subscription and usage based models.
  • Prior experience in a rapidly scaling company, managing complex revenue systems and multi-market accounting needs.
  • Experience and Knowledge of indirect global tax regulations, particularly as they relate to multi-entity and international business models.
