The Opportunity:
Flexport is looking for a creative, technically-minded Senior Machine Learning Engineer who is excited about solving challenging problems in fulfillment and logistics. We provide ecommerce merchants a full range of "port-to-porch" logistics solutions. This role focuses on building automated decision-making processes that ensure that we meet or exceed the expectations of our merchants for fulfillment speed and reliability, while growing the network in a cost-efficient way.
Data is at the heart of our business, and as a Machine Learning Engineer, you will develop and deploy first-in-class science products to make fulfillment easy and efficient for our merchants, in partnership with our Data Scientists. In collaboration with multidisciplinary product, engineering, and business/operations teams, you will apply advanced Operations Research (OR) and Machine Learning (ML) methods to deliver data-driven insights and automated decision-making solutions in Flexport’s fulfillment products.
Because this is a globally distributed team, the ideal candidate is self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and effective at clear written and verbal communication. You should thrive in driving projects end‑to‑end, from clarifying requirements and scoping solutions, to deploying and monitoring production systems.
You will:
- Architect, deploy and maintain scalable optimization, AI and ML solutions to enable and improve the service of the fulfillment network, including optimal inventory management and reliable delivery service
- Implement robust end‑to‑end ML pipelines considering data preparation, training, validation, deployment, observability, and retraining.
- Ensure production reliability by establishing testing, monitoring, and effective documentation practices.
- Contribute to projects that measurably impact business goals, translating a business need to an actionable development plan and executing the plan successfully
- Work cross-functionally across Data Science, Engineering, Product, Planning and Operations to implement robust and integrated production processes and monitoring
- Contribute to deployment and software engineering best practices for the team and across the organization
You should have:
- A degree in a quantitative field like Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.
- 5-8 years of industry experience in deploying optimization and/or machine learning models and developing practically efficient, automated solutions
- Experience developing, enhancing, and maintaining end-to-end data science production processes, including system design and architecture, deployment and monitoring
- Proficiency with Python and experience with cloud platforms, containerization and CI/CD. Experience with AWS and Snowflake preferred. Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes and infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform/CloudFormation) is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- A "compliance first" attitude to keep our regulators happy and enthusiastic about Flexport since we operate in a heavily regulated industry.
